What Is Mastery-Based Learning?
Mastery-based learning is a student-centered approach where progress is based on what students learn — not just how long they sit in class.
Instead of moving forward on a fixed schedule, students advance once they demonstrate a deep understanding of each skill or concept. This approach ensures every learner gets the time, support, and challenges they need to truly master their learning before moving on.
At its heart, mastery-based learning builds confidence, ownership, and a lifelong love of learning — because every student’s growth matters.

MEET JARIHIYA
Jarihiya is proof that where you start doesn't define where you're going. Through our individualized, evidence-based approach, she achieved a staggering 5.05 rate of improvement in reading.
She didn't just meet grade-level mastery - she conquered it. Now, she’s on a path to finish the year significantly above grade level.
MEET ANDREA
When Andrea arrived at Encompass, she was already performing at grade level. But here, we don’t just aim for proficiency….we strive for thriving.
In just five months, Andrea achieved an impressive rate of improvement of 3.9 in reading (fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary) and is now exceeding 3rd-grade-level standards. She’s shattering targets and proving there are no limits.
MEET CAMERON
Cameron, a third grader at Encompass Community School, is showing incredible growth in math this year. At the start of the school year, he was not meeting grade-level standards. After just five months of evidence-based instruction, combined with his focus and determination, Cameron has achieved an outstanding rate of improvement of 2.8. If he had continued at the same rate of growth as before joining Encompass, he would never have caught up to grade level. This acceleration in progress puts him on track to reach grade-level performance by the end of the school year. We are so proud of his perseverance and commitment to learning!
MEET LEON
Leon is doing much more than just keeping up, he is exceeding grade-level standards in math with confidence! By leaning into the science of learning and our personalized approach, Leon has achieved a remarkable 2.57x rate of improvement after just five months at Encompass!
MEET DA’MONI
Da’Moni entered Encompass as an incoming third grader, reading just 16 words per minute on a third-grade level. By January, he was already reading third-grade passages at 77 words per minute, an incredible leap.
Now, he is projected to reach 120 words per minute by the end of the year, meeting the benchmark for his grade level and setting him up for success in fourth grade. This tremendous growth is the result of Da’Moni’s hard work, paired with our intentional, personalized, mastery-based approach to instruction. Without this targeted support, he would have remained two years behind in reading, and instead, he’s on track and thriving.
There are a variety of ways to implement mastery-based learning. At Encompass, we believe in evidence-based practices rooted in research and will use the Morningside Model of Generative Instruction (MMGI).
MMGI derives from 40+ years of research and has been implemented in over 144 institutions worldwide.
On average, students enrolled at Morningside grow an average of 2.50 years in reading, 4 grade levels in language arts, and 3 grade levels in math.
