MASTERY-BASED LEARNING
What is Mastery-Based Learning (MBL)?
A mastery-based learning approach prioritizes fluency of foundational skills and allows students to spend more time engaged in inquiry-based learning that allows for real-world application.
MBL schools leverage sophisticated progress monitoring and flexible groupings to ensure that all kids get what they need, when they need it.
The bottom line: our approach catches students up and gets them ahead.
The Alternative
Most schools take a time-based approach to instruction: they teach a set of predetermined grade-level skills on a predetermined schedule for a predetermined amount of time.
Some kids acquire those skills, while others don't. Regardless, teachers move on to teaching new content. This creates tremendous variability in student proficiency.
As a public school, Encompass Community School has a responsibility to support and serve all students to reach their full potential. Click the link below to learn about how we support diverse learners!
There are a variety of ways to implement mastery-based learning. At Encompass, we believe in evidence-based practices rooted in research and will use the Morningside Model of Generative Instruction (MMGI).
MMGI derives from 40+ years of research and has been implemented in over 144 institutions worldwide.
On average, students enrolled at Morningside grow an average of 2.50 years in reading, 4 grade levels in language arts, and 3 grade levels in math.
